Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass Review

Gaining weight can be difficult for people with a high metabolism and for those who struggle to meet caloric goals. That is where ON Serious Mass from Optimum Nutrition comes in.

It is one of the most popular weight gainers available and retails at £41.99 for 2.7kg which provides 8 servings or £74.99 for 5.6kg, which provides 16 servings. One serving is 2 scoops and offers a massive 1250 calories consisting of 50g of protein and 250g of carbohydrates and has no added sugar but does contain Sucralose, an artificial sweetener. Be warned though, the scoop for Serious Mass isn’t like your average scoop. It’s more like something you use to put washing up powder into your washing machine..

ON Serious Mass Texture

Texture and Taste

The texture was where this product was let down. We struggled to get two scoops of powder and enough water into a 700ml mixing bottle. Even using a wire ball in the bottle, we had lumps. We found using a blender and around 800ml of milk or water was the best way to ensure the drink was free of lumps. We reviewed the chocolate flavour and can’t fault the taste. Optimum Nutrition have definitely got the taste right. It is a pleasure to drink and definitely satisfies your sweet tooth. Even with water, the taste was impressive and mixed with milk, it tastes a bit like a thick chocolate milkshake. It almost made me feel a bit guilty drinking it. Still not as quite as good as the amazing taste of PhD Diet Whey.

Serious Mass Results

To meet my calorie goals, I would measure out how many more calories I required for that day and used Serious Mass to hit these goals. While using this supplement, my recovery times were definitely improved. I believe this was down to the creatine and glutamine that is included in the supplement.

Final Words

As I am currently maintaining my weight, a 1250 calorie serving (two scoops) was too much for me and along with my calorie intake from food, would have put me well over my caloric requirements. On most days I used one scoop which equates to 625 calories to meet my caloric goals. Supplements are for supplementing in addition to your diet, and I always suggest getting your main calories from food. However Serious Mass is ideal for those who struggle to put on weight and for those who need to meet calorie goals. Stay away if you get more than enough calories from real food.
